Author Interview & Giveaway- Oath of Servitude by: C.E. Wilson

Oath of Servitude by: C.E. Wilson

Oath of Servitude (The Punishment Sequence)

Synopsis on Goodreads:

This is the story of Teague and Cailin, two teenagers who have been brought together by fate. Teague, a human, struggles to come to terms with the consequences of a recent accident that has destroyed the happy life that he had once enjoyed. Cailin, a pixi, is trying to stay true to herself while fighting against forces beyond her control that have exiled her from her home into this strange world of humans. She fears the darkness. He cannot escape it. But when the two of them are thrown together, they begin to discover the light inside of themselves.

My Review of Oath of Servitude

                               Author Interview:

1. What inspired you to first become an author? What keeps you inspired?

I have always loved to write and am often inspired by an image that I see. I was inspired to write Oath of Servitude by an amazing picture that I saw on DeviantArt by Blacklight29: http://fav.me/d3j4yh7. This picture motivated me to write a story about a non-typical male who had gone through some difficult times and was now miserable because of it. This is the picture that inspired the opening scene in the book, and the rest of the story flowed from there.
2. Is there a message you were trying to send your readers?

Love and friendship can come in all shapes and in all forms. One of my favorite types of relationship in stories is one where the characters have major size differences between them. In Oath of Servitude, Cailin is a foot-tall pixi and Teague is a human who is over six feet tall, but they are still able to form a friendship (and maybe more!) The idea is that differences can be strengths.
3. What book(s) are you currently reading?
4. Do you have any advice for other writers?

This advice is as much for me as it is for other writers: be patient. As a new author, no one knows who you are or what your writing style is, so you need to be patient and give readers a chance to discover your stories. When all else fails, just keep writing. The more books you have out there of good quality, the more likely it is that others will enjoy them.
5. What was the hardest part about writing your book?

The hardest part about writing a book, especially a series, is figuring out how you want the thing to end. When you are planning for a sequel, it can be a challenge to provide an ending that will leave readers both satisfied by solving some conflicts, but also leave the door open with more questions that need to be asked and answered.
6. What do you like doing during your free time?

When I have free time, I like to engage in a guilty pleasure: watching TV series on DVD. My favorite shows to watch are Gossip Girl, 90210, The Vampire Diaries, and the older seasons of America’s Next Top Model. They often prove to be quite relaxing after sitting in front of the computer for hours trying to come up with that next storyline.
7. How long did it take you to write Oath of Servitude?

It took me about a month to write the first draft, but it takes sooooooooo looooonnng to edit my stuff because when I write, I justgo. I don’t edit myself, and I don’t go back until I’m done. My first drafts can be quite a mess.
8. If you were asked to describe yourself in two words what would they be?

Unconventional Overachiever
9. When can book 2 in this series be expected to be released?

I’m really hoping that book 2 (Permanent Shadows) will be out and published in early 2013. It would be great to have it ready in January.
10. Is this a planned series, a planned amount of books in the series, or is this a natural series that will end when you get there?

I’m planning for four books, but I don’t want to say that anything is set in stone. It is probably safer to say that I will get to the end of the story when I get there. J
11. Can you share something from book 2 with us?

Sure! In Permanent Shadows we are going to delve into the secrets of the Ainsley family and learn what Owen (and his son) actually are.
12. My favorite character was Cailin because she is loyal and strong. Do you have a favorite character and why did you choose that person?

My favorite character is definitely Owen. I had a lot of fun developing this young father - even though Teague and Cailin are the two main characters, I really wanted a parent to kind of anchor them together. Teague has gone through a lot in his life, but Owen has a lot of secrets that he keeps from everyone. He knows a lot about the pixi world and yet he does not reveal much to Cailin or Teague. Owen’s friendship with Nolkrin is also complex and will be revealed in greater detail in Permanent Shadows.
13. Did you decide Teague should be blind before you began writing or is it something you decided to change later on?

I decided that Teague would be blind from the beginning, I’m not sure why, but when I saw that picture on DeviantArt that is how I pictured him. I wanted a male character who wasn’t perfect and was struggling with something that changed his life.
14. Will the truth about why Lennox Moon hates Cailin's family so much be revealed in book 2?

Oh, most definitely, but I will not say how MUCH of the truth. ;-)
15. What are some other loose ends that might be tied up in book 2?

Readers will learn more about the workings of Cailin’s pixi clan and how it relates to the world. There are three main non-human ‘races’ in The Punishment Sequence: Pixi, Mazikeen and Druid, and in Permanent Shadows readers will also learn how they have been able to evade discovery by humans.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer all of these questions and for stopping by! Hopefully you can come back for book 2 (she suggests (^-^) )!
