The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back

Description (Goodreads):
Everyone knows how all those fairy tales go. The princess gets beautiful, nabs her prince, falls instantly in love, lives happily ever after and leaves her evil stepsisters in the dust.

But what happens when you’re the ugly stepsister and your obnoxiously perfect—read pretty, smart, and, worst of all, sickeningly nice—stepsister is dating the charming, tall, devastatingly handsome guy you’ve had a thing for since you were nine years old?

Quirky, artistic and snarky Mattie Lowe does not lead a charmed life. Her mother is constantly belittling her on Skype. Mercedes, the school mean girl, has made it her personal mission to torment Mattie. But worst of all? Her stepsister Ella is the most beautiful, popular girl in school and is dating Mattie’s secret longtime crush, Jake Kingston.

Tired of being left out and done with waiting for her own stupid fairy godmother to show up, Mattie decides to change her life. She’ll start by running for senior class president against wildly popular Jake.

Ella can keep her Prince Annoying. Mattie’s going to rule the school.

And no one, not even a cute and suddenly flirty Jake, is going to stop her.

Tens List Topic:
Top Ten Books with Mythical Creatures

10. Twilight. I hated the way the entire series turned out – she pretty much lost me at Book 3, but I adored the first one and recommended it to everyone I came across.
9. Iron King. I don’t typically get too into stories with fairies, but I thought this one was really well done. And, um, Team Ash.
8. Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. I liked the book, but I loved the graphic novel. If you haven’t read it, choose the graphic novel version first. So, so entertaining.
7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8. Technically a comic book series, but I’m choosing to look at it as a graphic novel just so that I can include Buffy.
6. Shannarra series. Terry Brooks was my first “favorite author” that I met in person at a signing. He liked my name. Some books are better than others, but I love being immersed in the world of Shannara.
5. The Princess Bride. Fantastic movie, and there’s even more awesomeness in the written version. The Wesley/Dread Pirate Roberts secret also works better in the book. I actually gasped when I discovered the truth while reading it.
4. The Hunger Games. Sure, they’re more genetically modified creatures than mythical ones (mockingjays, jabberjays, muttations), but any time you can mention The Hunger Games on a list, you should do it.
3. A Game of Thrones. Putting aside the ickiness (some of the gore, Cersei and Jamie, etc.), this is such a fantastic book then when I finished reading it I immediately went out and read all the others. I need him to WRITE FASTER and publish the next one.
2. The original Pride & Prejudice. Because Darcy as the perfect man is obviously a mythical creature that doesn’t actually exist in real life. ;)
1. Harry Potter series. I have books in the series that I love more than others, but overall, the Harry Potter books are among my absolute favorites, and ones that I reread over and over again.

I, personally, couldn't stand Twilight. The movie was great, the writing was slow. I've read a little of The Host (also by Stephanie Meyer) and the writing seems to be better.
The Hunger Games is great, and I totally agree. ;)
Oh, and I love your name, too.
Thanks for stopping by! (:

  1. That sounds like absurdly delightful book :) And I agree with most of author's top ten! Mr. Darcy is as mythical as unicorns, unfortunately :(
